What Does It Mean To “Eat Like Our Ancestors Ate”?

Why do we keep talking about “eating like our ancestors ate”? What does that make you think about? What kind of food did your ancestors eat? Lamb? Pig? Fish? 

If you’re looking for nutrient-dense food, going back a generation or two (or 10) might enlighten you on how much our food has changed in recent years. We believe in the importance of considering how our ancestors ate as we navigate how to live a much healthier lifestyle as well as working through challenges like food transparency and food freedom. 

Understanding how our ancestors ate will also help you understand our farm and why we’ve chosen to farm regeneratively. It’s a priority for us at 1984Farms to produce meat like our ancestors ate… nutrient-dense, clean, and natural.

What we mean by “ancestors” is both our personal genealogy and the early history of human survival. We can go back a couple of generations, before food like Lucky Charms and Ramen were in every household, and recognize that human diets were simple and natural.

May I tell you about my own lovely grandmother? She grew up on a dry farm in Utah and ate a lot of meat and raw dairy. Growing up, she and her family had a family milk cow, and would eat or use all the parts of the meat animals. She loves pork rinds, and was raised knowing how to fry up pig skin. It’s her 96th birthday TODAY and she’s just starting to slow down. I consider her the epitome of health! 

When we consider the way meat was raised or hunted historically, there are 4 specific things we are trying to simulate with regenerative farming here at 1984Farms.

  1. Pure, Clean meat. Animals were not affected by synthetic toxins like pesticides, medications, or vaccines. 
  1. Wild game and meat animals naturally ate grasses, not grain. It has only been since the 1960’s that feedlot operations and vitamin-infused grain have been introduced to farm animals, affecting the animals who literally do not have the stomach for it. 
  1. Wild game and meat animals lived out in the open. They were free to roam in the sunshine, and they instinctively foraged for what they needed. Animals moved around and some migrated, leaving the grass to regrow before returning to an area.

  1. Our ancestors diets prioritized animal foods. Their diets consisted of nutrient-dense food like meat and dairy. (Their diets also lacked the amount of chemicals, synthetic vitamins, preservatives, and fillers that most store-bought food contains today.) 

It doesn’t take much to look around and recognize that the health of our society is struggling. The diet of the average American is so far from the way our ancestors ate, even just a hundred years ago, and we’re paying for it in our physical, mental, and emotional health. 

We believe that eating the way our ancestors ate promotes healthier individuals, healthier families, communities, and ultimately a healthier world.

Why does our meat cost so much?

  1. Small-scale farmers like us cover the costs of everything from start to finish, including:
  • High-quality feed
  • High-quality animal care when needed

  1. Small-scale farms don’t usually have access to Government subsidies. (Meaning we don’t get any financial compensation or breaks like a lot of large corporations)
  1. Small-scale farms don’t have the herd size. (Overhead costs spread across 100,000 animals is different than spread across 50 animals)

We can get into the math of it all – the going price at sale barns, costs of processing, overhead – but I might lose you. 😉

My purpose is not to down-talk getting beef from the grocery store. We encourage everyone to eat meat no matter where you get it vs. skipping it.  My purpose is to educate you so you can make your own informed decision about the meat you consume and feed to your family.

Primal Shepherd’s Pie

One of our favorite meals on the farm is Shepherd’s pie. This recipe is adapted from Simply Recipes. A little bit different then the way my mom made it growing up, but it still brings back warm memories of childhood.

This nutrient-dense meal is a traditional comfort food that easily works for anyone with food sensitivities and for those that are grain-free!

All of the ingredients (except for our pasture-finished ground beef!) can be purchased through Azure Standard. Great pricing for high-quality organic foods.

You will need:

  • Redmond Real Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 6 medium-size potatoes
  • 1/4 cup grass-fed butter
  • 1 onion
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen veggies ( some or all green beans, peas, carrots, celery)
  • 2 lbs 1984 Primal Ground (beef and beef heart blend!)
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Raw Cheddar cheese *optional

Peel and quarter your potatoes, cover with cold water in a large pot and bring them to a boil. Simmer for about 20 minutes or until tender enough to pierce with a fork. Pour off the water, add 8 tbsp. of butter, salt, and mash.

While the potatoes are cooking, pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees and start cooking your ground beef. When it is mostly browned, add your chopped onions, salt, and pepper.

I used corn in this image was made with corn – I now advise using hominy or omitting corn completely.

When the meat is browned add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, and frozen veggies. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low, and cook uncovered for about 10 minutes. Taste test and add more seasonings as needed.

Spread the meat mixture evenly in a 9×13 casserole dish. Then spread the mashed potatoes over the top of the meat mixture. Rough up the surface of the potatoes so that peaks will get browned and crispy or spread a layer of shredded cheese.

Bake in the 400-degree oven for about 30 minutes or until browned and bubbling. Broil for a minute or two to help brown the mashed potatoes or cheese.

Let sit for about 5 minutes after removing from the oven and enjoy!

The Truth About Grass-Fed Meat: Is Your Label Lying?”

Grass-Fed, What Does it Mean?

There are many ways to raise an animal for food, and just as many names to go with it.

You’ve probably heard of grass-fed, grass-finished, and grain-finished. Some newer market terms are pasture-fed, pasture-finished, and pastured.

What do they all mean and what does it mean to you as the customer?

First, it will be important for you to understand the difference between fed, finished, grass, and pasture.

Anything ending in FED.

This includes Grass, Pasture, and anything else you might have seen. This means that the animal has consumed this food, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only thing it has consumed nor does it denote the animal’s lifestyle. For example, hay is grass. An animal can be called grass-fed if it is in a small stall and fed hay its whole life. That same animal can be finished on grain (more on that later) but still be consuming hay/grass/pasture, so is technically still grass-fed.

Anything Ending in Finished

This is what the animal consumes for the last part of its life (typically 6 months) before it is harvested.

Referring back to our grass-fed animal, it can be raised on grass or pasture for the majority of its life and then given heavy amounts of grain to increase its weight and fat content.

An animal that is grass-finished means they were given only grass for the last 6 months, but could have received grain earlier in its life.

Grass or Pasture?

Believe it or not, there is a difference in this labeling.

Yes, grass is in pasture, but that’s not the only place you will find it. Grass grows in many places, including mountain ranges where a lot of cattle are raised from late spring through early fall or flat land that isn’t cultivated. (think open prairie/grasslands) There are pastures that are grass only and the farmers go through tremendous efforts to ensure nothing else grows there so they can be certified grass only for marketing.

Pasture, on the other hand, is typically cultivated with irrigation and seeding of a variety of herbaceous plants with grass. You will see things like clover, plantain, dandelion, alfalfa, chickweed, thistle, and more.

Putting it all together

Now that you have a better understanding of the basics, I’ll outline how you can understand each of the terms to ensure you are able to find exactly what you are looking for.

Grassfed – The animal ate grass (could be grazing or hay) for a good majority of its diet but could have other things in its diet as well.

Grass-finished – This animal was fed only grass for the last 6 months of its life before harvest.

Grain-fed – Could have small amounts of hay or grazing but mostly grain (think 4-H projects) for the majority of its life.

Pastured/fed/raised – Raised on cultivated pastures with a variety of leafy greens but could have other things in its diet as well, like grain.

Pasture-finished – The animal grazed in pastures for the last six months of its life and nothing else.

If you see only one of these terms, you are only getting part of the story of what the animal ate in its life. You are better off seeing how it was fed AND finished to ensure you are getting what you want. As you can see, there can be a lot of combinations!

Good, Better, Best

Here are our suggestions if we were to put beef, lamb goat, etc., which are all nutritious, in these categories.

Good – grass-fed/grain-finished or pasture-fed/grain-finished

Better – grass-fed/grass-finished

Best – pasture-fed/pasture-finished

When you are looking for pork or poultry, our recommendation is always pastured and soy/corn free.

Then there is the conversation of vaccines, chemical dewormers, hormones, etc. That is a big conversation for another blog post.

At 1984 Farms, we are a pasture-fed and pasture-finished operation. We do not regularly use any synthetic injections, sprays, or “dip“. We rely on our animal and pasture management, nutrition, and natural supplementation program to raise the healthiest and cleanest meat possible next to the wild. Meat like your ancestors ate, from our pastures to your plate.
